Protein Fluff

My favorite way to drink my protein shakes is in the form of what I call “fluff“.

Two things make my protein shakes look and taste like a milkshake. A frozen banana and a food processor. I’ve figured out the combination of these two things make a wonderfully whipped shake that resembles the Wendy’s frosty.

I do multiple variations of these shakes but below are the key ingredients:

  • 1 frozen banana (in slices)
  • 1/4 cup of unsweetened vanilla almond milk
  • 1 scoop of protein powder of choice- my favorite!
  • a handful of ice cubes
  • a food processor (I use one similar to this Cuisinart)

If you want to add more fruit to your shake, sometimes I do frozen strawberries or blueberries when using my plain vanilla powder, nix the ice cubes!

Here is exactly how I make my shakes:

  1. Pulse the frozen banana in the food processor for about 5-10 seconds
  2. Add the almond milk and mix for 5 seconds
  3. Add the protein powder and mix for 1 minute continuously
  4. Add the ice cubes and mix continuously for 2 minutes (or the frozen fruit)
  5. Pour and enjoy!

I will sometimes drink with a straw but I also like to eat with a spoon. The fluff creates a lot of volume too so it looks like you are getting a HUGE serving, but the calorie count is still the same!

Depending on the fruit, the shakes average in around 220-235 calories. Not too shabby for a milkshake huh?

Here is the nutritional info for a standard fluff: 220 calories, 3.1 grams of fat, 27.6 grams of carbs, 2.9 grams of dietary fiber, 15.6 grams of sugar (banana), 24-26 grams of protein (depending on the brand of whey)

      Yeah usually I do since they only come in around 230 cals, so I will do oatmeal or egg whites or something too!

    Can you taste the bananas in the fluff? I REALLY don’t like bananas (sad, I know) and I’m scared to try this recipe because of them. But I know it won’t be as fluffy and creamy without the bananas. Such a dilemma! Thanks!

      If you add enough protein powder you cannot taste it at all! Try adding cocoa powder too to cover up the taste, or maybe some PB2 or peanut butter. You can also try adding just HALF of a banana!

        You can swap mangos for bananas which give the same creaminess, but I’d stick with a fruit flavor. Mango and chocolate sound like a strange combination.

      One trick I do is I use chocolate protein powder then add frozen cherries. You don’t taste banana at all and it’s like chocolate covered cherries. Or add cocoa powder like Katie suggested! Delicious and you get all the fluffiness from using the whole banana!

      I use a tablespoon or two of sugar free jello pudding powder to my shakes sometimes no fruit at all makes it thicker expecially if i use greek yogurt too.

      Any fruit will help. I’ve used strawberries in the past and it worked well.

      They are just a substitute for a meal. I don’t recommend liquid diets.

    I put bananas in a ziplock bag and mash them up and freeze. The frozen banana is what helps make it thick. I use protein powder as well,almond milk,spinach,kale and blueberries or some other frozen fruit. Just like a thick milkshake. I drink mine after a 4 mile walk,which counts as my lunch.

    I do this all the time! For a treat add a table spoon of peanut butter! Adds 4g of protien & is ridiculously good with chocolate flavoured protein powder 🙂
