Micro Managing and Macro Managing

Happy Happy Thursday! Yes, that’s a double happy I threw at you.

I know it was only a 3 day work week, but yesterday was pretty much poo for me. I was busy all day andΒ I didn’t get lunch. What happens when I don’t get a lunch? Well typically I get moody, mean, and have a raging headache, but I was fine in that department. I just felt SUPER nauseated by 330pm. It was probably the fact that I was running strictly on coffee by then. I needed food in my belly bad.

Notice the irritated look on my face… I’m not happy when I don’t get to eat. Somewhere G-Mama is saying oh no… baby girl, they better watch out for her! She knows how I get when I’m hungry πŸ˜‰

My day was filled with micro managing and seeing patients. Basically trying to decide what was desperate to be done and what could be held off on as long as possible. Too much to do and not enough time to do it in!

Towards the end of the day I was like okay Katie you are almost there, you can do it. Then I was in a patient room, spending a good amount of time explaining things to him when he said to me “You know there needs to be more PAs like you. You really were helpful and wonderful” (I had been taking care of him for a few days). Well I just thanked him of course, but that man totally made my day. It made the no lunch and the stress worth it. It’s little moments like that when I realize my hard work does make a difference. It’s nice to hear it every now and then πŸ™‚

Moving on, since I didn’t have lunch and I had waves of nausea, I used yesterday as my rest day. I was due for one anyway. I came home and stuffed some rice paper wraps in my face. Why I chose something that needed to be assembled, I’m not sure, but it sounded good at the time!

I stink at wrapping these in a presentable way! The “green sauce” is actually my Vampire hummus I posted the other day. Nom Nom.

After some refueling, I walked Miss Buffay and then came inside to do a little research on IIFYM (If it Fits Your Macros). Basically this is a “diet plan” and I use quotations because I don’t really consider it a diet, more a lifestyle preference, that calculates what you need to eat based on your weight, age, height, and exercise habits. It sounds like the best way to get your full nutritional value! I’ve been asked about this MANY times by readers and I see it constantly on Instagram. It’s how most body builders and lifters eat. Everyone is different, lives their own lifestyle and has their own physical makeup, so why should you stick to a certain number of calories, carbs, fat grams, etc if it’s not catered towards you specifically? IIFYM takes care of this. I used THIS WEBSITE to help me figure out my macros.

Oh and in case you are wondering, macros are macro nutrients, or the essentials of your diet: carbs, fat, protein, fiber.Β

I’m 28 years old. I am approximately 5’3”, weigh about 120 lbs and I exercise 6 days a week. Here was my breakdown:

  • To maintain my current weight I need to take in 1882 calories.
  • To lose weight I need to take in 1600 calories
  • This is 156.5 grams of carbs, 121 grams of protein, 54.5 grams of fat, and 24-30 grams of fiber daily.
  • If I do 3 meals a day (more reasonable for my work days), this is 52.2 grams of carbs, 40.3 grams of protein, 18.2 grams of fat, Β 8-10 grams of fiber, and 533 calories PER MEAL.

This sounds manageable doesn’t it?

I think the thing I like most about the IIFYM plan is that there is no restriction as to when you can have your carbs. As they say “if it fits your macros” you can have it whenever.

The big drawback I see about actually doing this is that I hate counting calories and measuring things out. As I read a little more, they say after a few weeks you will be able to eye ball things and know if it fits your macros. I try so many new recipes though that it might be difficult for me.

If you follow this lifestyle, let me know! I’d love to hear how it’s working for you πŸ™‚

For dinner I ended up making baked chicken nuggets breaded in cornflakes. I haven’t made them in a very long time, but I wanted something crunchy and sweet! I made a lot and then the fat was trimmed for Phoebs!

Thank you for posting the link. I was just wondering last night how much protein I should be getting. I’m way off I usually get around 80grams but I should be getting around 140. I need to refigure my menu!!

That’s always great when you have someone say your doing a great job, especially when you don’t expect it or see it coming! It’s the little things πŸ™‚ I’ve recently seen IIFYM getting a lot of attention lately, all over Instagram. I’ve thought about doing it, but I know I would always be super low on carbs, they just bother my stomach a lot. Aw, I love that picture of Phoebe stretching on you, so darn cute πŸ™‚ Hope those stairmasters are fixed!! Have a great day πŸ™‚

I’m way too high on my carbs. Well not an outrageous amount, but it’s my fruit issue!

I’ve read a lot about IIFYM too and have calculated my numbers using the same site. I don’t like counting or measuring my food because it stresses me out but I’ve been loosely following to to control my eating and have a carb/protein target. I’ve gained like 5 lbs marathon training and don’t want to gain anymore so I’m trying to keep my macros in check and hope that helps!

It’s interesting to learn what macros may fit you, based on the results I got from that website, I think I might change/tweak my ‘diet’ a bit. I need to focus on eating more fat and less carbs I think as I sometimes suffer from stomach aches. Thanks for discussing this issue and alerting me to that website, it has been very helpful!!
I think once you understand it all it won’t be as stressful to work out. Tam x

Same! I talk about this today. I eat way too many carbs and not enough fat

No problem, I thought I should post something about it because people often ask me what I think about it. Yeah I have stomach aches from bloat and gluten-y carbs!

This seems to be a common question at the moment. I was tracking my food intake focusing on the protein-carb-fat ratio for about 2 weeks now. I wanted to check how much I get of each and then figure out how I have to adjust. So you shared this at exactly the right time for me πŸ™‚ Thank you! I am curious what I really need. I will have a look now. I hope this way of measuring your food helps you achieving your goal.
    Have a great weekend πŸ™‚

Way off πŸ˜› – too many carbs but not enough protein. I love my fruit too much at the moment…
