Short On Time

Hi everyone.

Welcome to Tuesday.

Do we all remember when I used to call them my “Terrible Tuesdays”? I’m sure G-Mama and my Dad do. I think about where I was as a person then and you guys may have thought I had it all together. Turns out I was VERY lost. I competed because it gave me something to do when I wasn’t working. I didn’t have anyone special in my life, didn’t have many friends, and spent most of my time with Phoebe. The gym filled the void and now I realize there is much more to life.

I love being able to workout because I want to, not because I HAVE to. I love being able to choose what I want to train, instead of making sure I hit legs two to three days a week. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, workout how YOU want to, not how someone else thinks you should. Yesterday I shared Sarah with you guys. She runs because she loves it and she feels accomplished. I wish I could do the same, but running just isn’t my thing. I’d much rather sprint up a step mill or race on a spin bike. To each their own 😉

Time is not my friend lately, so soon I will be a home workout kinda gal on days I’m at work late, working back to back shifts. I was never too fond of working out at home because I needed to actually go to the gym to get anything done. Sometimes I’d go home and say I’d workout, but then blow it off.

Does anyone have tips for avoiding this? I know some of you workout at home!

Once we move into the new house, I will be putting a spin bike in the rec room so I can do my cardio before or after work. It’s going to make a big difference since some nights I don’t walk into the door until almost 10 at night. I have a bosu, resistance bands, and small hand weights, but nothing that can make a huge impact on a workout. I guess I could always throw in those lovely plyometrics huh? Or a lot of high reps!

ALWAYS bring water to spin class!
ALWAYS bring water to spin class!

If you have any suggestions for making my life easier please throw them at me!

I’m off for the day. I’ll see you back tomorrow!

XOXO With a Cherry On Top,

-Minnie

Hi! That is great that you want to work out from home on your long days. I always work out at home and don’t belong to a gym. Since last fall, I have been using http://www.fitnessblender.com for free workouts I can do at home. There are over 500 free workouts that are amazing! Fitnessblender has changed my life and given me a much healthier outlook on fitness and nutrition!

My husband has just started doing those workouts, and they looked like something I would be able to do on days I was short on time. Like crossfit without risk of serious injury to the crossfit naïve 😉

Love your blog! I’m a longtime reader but this is my first time commenting. I’ve actually been thinking about purchasing a spin bike for home and was wondering if you have any recommendations?

I’ve been looking at the actual SPINNER bikes. They are a bit more than ones you will find on amazon, but the reviews on amazon are shotty. I want something sturdy that’s going to actually last!

Girl, I feel you on this. When I changed jobs just over two years ago, my commute became an hour each way. I had been dead set in my routine of going to the gym before work, and if I missed for any reason, my day and my mental state suffered. However, I quickly realized that my former gym schedule was not going to be feasible with my new work scenario if I was going to keep my sanity. My only option really was to work out at home.
I had slowly accumulated a little bit of equipment and free weights over the years, but it’s not the same as getting the kind of work out you do with cables and machines at the gym. So I started searching craigslist and Facebook yard sale/buy, sell, and trade groups until I found a good deal on a universal cable machine with a built in squat rack. It also came with an incline/decline bench built with a leg extension and leg curl seat, and even a preacher curl attachment. The guy I got it from also had a bunch of additional cable attachments, weight bars, a weight rack, and about 300 pounds worth of free weights and weight plates. I got a freaking amazing deal at $300 for everything— especially since it was pretty much in new condition. I think it is a good time of year to start hunting for this kind of stuff at a good price, because people tend to buy things at new years and then end up selling them once their resolution motivation fades. Plus there’s always people moving or upgrading their equipment who post stuff for sale too.
I have definitely still had to adjust my training style, but you could do a lot of things (even like what you posted the other day from run everything labs) with what you could find online to use in your house. All of my equipment fits in our master bedroom. Not ideal for décor purposes, but it is what it is! I don’t want it to rust, and our garage isn’t climate controlled. If you have a flight of stairs, that works great as a substitute for stair climber… I know you will miss having a stair climber. If you have hardwood floors, a towel and a heavy weight plate make a great substitute for doing sled pushes. My husband set up a set of ropes for us on a tree outside. Just the other day I saw weighted ropes that are supposed to work like battle ropes, but they are pretty pricey. We also have a pull-up bar that attaches to the doorway.
Just remember, it won’t be forever! I’ve had more fun than I expected coming up with ways to change things up, and am surprised at the positive way the situation has allowed me to keep fresh motivation.

This was EXTREMELY helpful! We were looking for a treadmill or something on craigslist, I never really thought about cables. It definitely is that time of year for people to be getting rid of stuff they purchased on a whim, so I’ll start looking. Luckily, we have a downstairs area, or a “rec room” that I plan on using as a workout space. We do have stairs, they are not ideal for running up and down, so that’s why I’m going with the spin bike. I still plan on going to the gym days I’m off but this will definitely help! Thanks so much 🙂
