Women Lift Too

Someone had a case of the Monday’s. And NO it wasn’t me.

I’m at the gym today, like every day, and usually I am the only girl near the weights and cables. Most girls stick to cardio, but I jump right in with the boys. WELL, it seems men don’t like that. And little do they know, I’m a crazy women’s rights kinda gal. I believe in equality, fair pay, and I am not cool with gender roles. I can do anything a man can do, and sometimes better 😉

Anyway, back to the story. I went to use one of the cables, and a guy interrupted me (let’s call him Mr. PumpYouUp). He was working on another machine, and told me he was using this one too. Keep in mind its 530 in the afternoon, crowded, and you can’t be on 2 machines at once. Come on dude! So he starts arguing with me because I wanted to use it and I removed his cable. He’s like nope I am still on it, I have more sets, and then says well what are you even going to use it for…? EXCUSE ME!? Basically I wasn’t going to fight with Mr. PumpYouUp, so I got snippy, dropped the cable, and said to him just forget it, take it (I usually don’t give up, believe me, but I didn’t want to argue today, and I grabbed kettle bells instead)

Well what was going on through my head is not blog appropriate. The way he said this to me was as if he was saying well you are a woman, you are going to play around on this thing, not take it serious. Nothing drives me more insane than when people think I am just being “cute” and lifting with the boys. Unfortunately, this is NOT the first time this has happened to me. In fact, it happens quite often. And every single time I am floored. This is 2012. I’m a woman, and I lift darn-it!

After dinner (I had some of my Yummy Spicy Seitan Sausages and some brussels sprouts) Phoebe and I watched Ellen and The Voice and set up our Christmas Tree! This is Phoebe’s first Christmas! I just have to get a puppy’s first Christmas ornament with her name on it. This is our tree

Obviously not real, or green, but it works for us 🙂

And then Phoebe wanted to check it out a little bit…

Just sniffing around

So last night I made Skinny Minnie ChocoChip Muffins. Made of whole wheat flour, applesauce, almond milk, and other goodies. You can have one or two of these guilt free!

Yum!

It was a Big Bang Baking Night 🙂

Onto gym stuff! Even though Mr. PumpYouUp totally TickedMeOff , I continued

I started with the evil Stairmaster to work up a good sweat and then went onto shoulders

  • Upright rows using a 30lb bar. 15 reps x 4 sets. Pulse for 8 at the end of the 2nd and 4th set
  • Straight front raises using a 20lb bar (arms straight, lift and lower the bar to shoulder height and back down). 12 reps x 4 sets
  • Shoulder rolls with arms straight in front of you. 5 lb kettle bells each hand. Circle arms 20 times, then reverse. 4 sets. (For two of these sets only do 10)
  • Shoulder abduction with bent elbows. Holding 17.5lb dumbbells, elbows into body, palms facing each other, open and close bringing the dumbbells to shoulder height and back down. 15 reps x 4 sets
  • Hammer curls (threw these in for fun) 12 reps x 4 sets

Then I hit more cardio (arc trainer for 20 minutes) and grabbed a big stability ball

While on the ball, I did sitting shoulder presses to really challenge my core (balance). Using 12lb dumbbells I did 15 reps x 2 sets, and 12 reps x 2 sets with palms facing each other.

Finished up with crunches on the ball, oblique crunches, and some stretching!

    That is so obnoxious! At my gym, there have been a few times when guys have come over to instruct me on “form” when I haven’t even started lifting yet! Like they’re just anticipating I’m going to drop the barbells on the floor or something. harrumph!

      I know! Isn’t it so annoying? Meanwhile they are going to throw their back out from trying to lift so much weight, with improper form. Don’t get me started girlfriend.. haha
